Challenge Recipe

Today's planned challenge dinner consists of a vegetable chowder and a side of bread.

Ingredients to shop for:
potatoes
carrots
corn
peppers
onion
milk
bread

The milk had a few options. There was "regular" milk (1 gallon=$2.50), organic milk (1 gallon=$4.99), and milk from pasture-grazed cows (64 oz.=$3.00). They all said they were grown without artificial growth hormones, but the organic added without antibacterials or pesticides; it also stated that the milk came from family farms.

The produce had differences between organic and "regular." In all cases the organic was more expensive. I was also interested in the difference between fresh, frozen, and canned. Fresh carrots were $1.29 for a pound, canned $.68/15.25 oz, and frozen for $1/16 oz. Onion were $.99/lb (and packed in La Crosse, WI, although it only said produced in the USA), and organic was $3.29 for a bag. Potatoes were $.59/lb, or $4.99 for 5 lbs. Peppers were $1.29/lb, or organic was $3.49 for 2. Corn was frozen $1/16 oz and canned $.68/15.25 oz. I didn't see any fresh, but I expect in the fall when it's in season that it would be available.

I took a look at the nutrition labels for the corn to compare canned versus frozen. The fat and protein was about the same, but the can had 13% daily value of sodium, where frozen had 0mg. However, the canned had lower carbohydrates, with a higher percentage of fiber (3% carbs canned versus 7% carbs frozen).

I am not inclined to buy organic; the price is a big inhibiting factor for me. When I consider that organic milk is twice as expensive as regular it doesn't seem worth it. The one difference where I will go higher is with fresh versus canned or frozen. For example, bakery bread is delicious (much better than packaged bread) and is only about $.25 more. -Deidra A
