Challenge Day: SNAP $15 Budget


Breakfast:

Basic Breakfast Sausage
  • 1 lb lean boneless pork ($2.99)
  • ¼ lb fresh pork fatback ($0.38)
  • Salt*

  • Dried sage*
Banana Smoothie
  • 4 bananas ($0.59)

White Bean Soup with Veggies
  • 1 c dried white beans($1.40)
  • 6 c chicken stock ($0.99)

  • 1 medium turnip($0.63)
  • 1 potato ($0.38)
  • 1 celery stalk ($0.12)
  • Parsley*
  • Rosemary*
Carrots with Ranch Dressing ($0.49)

Dinner:

Chicken and Vegetables
  • 1 lb + 4 oz chicken thighs, boneless & skinless ($2.49)
  • ½ c chopped onion ($0.41)
  • 10 oz cut green beans, frozen ($1.29)

  • Garlic powder*
  • Pepper*
Rice ($0.51)

=$14.81 This price assumes that they used this week's coupons and grocery deals.
 
Unfortunately I ran out of money before I got to dessert, which was rather unfortunate because I had planned baked pears. However, if the family had wanted dessert, they could have substituted the breakfast sausage (which was a bit expensive) for plain old scrambled eggs. It was a little surprising to see how cheap individual ingredients could be, but when added together it can get to be a lot of money. -Deidra A
